Babies rock

I guess I always knew that I liked babies. I mean, I did seek out to have one for many years. And when we moved to adoption, I knew I wanted to go down the infant adoption route. And when I was younger I would babysit babies and I have always enjoyed hanging out with other people's babies. But some people are more into toddlers or pre-schoolers or school age kids or whatever. I have a friend who is adopting through the foster care system and she is hoping to be matched with a 2-year old because to her, that is just the perfect age.

Now that I've had the privilege to spend the last (almost) five months in the almost constant presence of a (no longer so) tiny baby, I just think babies are amazing. They have no attitude, but they know exactly what they want and how to get it. Their needs and desires are very straight forward and apparent. When they are happy, they are not afraid to show it in full force. When they are upset, the same thing goes. When they change from upset to happy, there is no lingering resentment. They are also extremely flexible which makes for some pretty cool acrobatics.

I was reading a blog recently of a mom who just adopted her second son and she was saying that now that she knows what's ahead she can't wait for all of those moments to arrive. Since little A is my first (and perhaps only??) child I can be fully surprised with every new development that happens, and I am fully enraptured in it - to the point of wishing it could always stay this way. Until the next development happens, which is - at this point - only hours away, it seems.

I know that each day, each month, each milestone will bring on new joys that I can't even imagine right now. But in this moment I am so enjoying my baby, in all her baby-ness.

Happy 2009, ya'll.
